My father's Seiko 5 had not run for about three years. I brought it in expecting the worst. They assessed it, explained the condition clearly, and recommended an overhaul. It came back running very well. The timing sheet they included was a nice touch — I had not seen one before.

I was in Chiang Mai for two weeks and brought my vintage Omega Constellation in for a service. The turnaround was tight but they managed it. Communication was clear throughout — they messaged when they found a worn click spring and asked before replacing it. That kind of transparency is not always easy to find.

I sent my grandfather's dress watch from Bangkok by post after emailing Lanna first. They guided me on packaging and kept me informed. The fine restoration took about six weeks. The case looks considerably better and the movement is running within a couple of seconds a day. I would have liked a little more detail in the condition note at the start, but overall a good experience.

Found Lanna after searching for a watchmaker in northern Thailand who handles vintage pieces seriously. Brought two watches — a 1960s Longines and a mid-70s Citizen — for overhauling. Both came back well-regulated and with documented service records. The Longines in particular was impressive; amplitude is much better than before.

Brought in a simple automatic that had been running about two minutes fast per day. They recommended a service check and clean rather than a full overhaul, which I appreciated — they could easily have suggested the more expensive option. It came back running closely and cost exactly what they quoted.

As a long-term resident I have used Lanna three times now. They have worked on two of my daily wearers and one vintage piece. The consistency is what keeps me coming back — same level of care each time, same clear communication. The waiting time can be a little longer than I would like when they are busy, but the quality makes up for it.

Detailed journeys
A closer look at three watches
Case study 01
A 1968 Longines manual-wind that stopped mid-wind
Challenge
The owner had wound the watch one morning and felt a small slip in the crown. The watch stopped shortly after. She was uncertain whether this was a mainspring failure or something more serious, and was worried about causing further damage by continuing to wind it.
Service
Assessment confirmed a failed mainspring — the bridle had detached from the barrel. The movement was overhauled in full: disassembled, ultrasonically cleaned, new mainspring fitted, reassembled with fresh lubrication throughout. The case was also lightly cleaned as part of the fine restoration upgrade requested by the owner.
Outcome
Watch returned running within ±4 seconds per day. Timing figures documented. Service record provided. Owner reported four weeks later that it was still performing consistently. Duration: 4 weeks total including consultation time.
"I thought I had broken it for good. It runs better now than it did when my mother gave it to me."
Case study 02
A modern automatic worn daily for eight years without service
Challenge
A daily-wear Swiss automatic that had never been serviced. The owner noticed it was losing about ninety seconds per day, down from its previous performance. The rotor was also sounding slightly rough when spun.
Service
Movement overhaul carried out. Rotor bearing was found to be dry and contaminated — cleaned and re-lubricated. Balance pivot showed minor wear but was within acceptable tolerance; cleaned and re-poised rather than replaced. Timing regulation achieved across five positions.
Outcome
Returned running at approximately +3 seconds per day average across positions. Rotor now runs silently. Gaskets replaced, water resistance confirmed at 50m. Total time: 3 weeks. Cost: ฿9,800 as quoted.
"Happy I did not leave it any longer. They were honest that it would have needed more work in another couple of years."
Case study 03
A dress watch sent by post from Kuala Lumpur for fine restoration
Challenge
A 1972 Longines ultra-thin sent from Malaysia. The case had been previously over-polished, losing its original faceted lines. The owner wanted the character of the case restored alongside a full movement service, while retaining the aged dial rather than replacing it.
Service
Full movement overhaul. Case work involved re-establishing the facet lines on the lugs and case sides through careful hand finishing, followed by a restrained polish on the top surfaces only. Dial conserved in situ. Hands cleaned. All steps photographed and discussed with owner via email before proceeding.
Outcome
Watch returned by tracked courier, insured. Movement running at ±6 seconds per day. Case character restored to the owner's satisfaction. Finishing touches record provided alongside full service documentation. Total time: 7 weeks.
"The case looks like itself again rather than like something found in a shop window. Worth every baht."
